Posted by The National Democratic Front (NDF) has urged Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to follow the recent order from the Supreme Court or face jail time.
According to XANDERTECH, a seven-member panel led by Justice John Okoro issued an interim injunction on Wednesday to prevent the Federal government, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and commercial banks from implementing the 10th of February deadline for the old N200, N500, and N1000 naira notes to cease to be legal tender.
The ruling was the result of a motion ex parte filed on February 3, 2023, by three governors from the northern region, according to our correspondent.
Through their legal counsel, AbdulHakeem Mustapha (SAN), the three governors of Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara pleaded with the Supreme Court to halt the CBN’s naira redesign policy.
Even though the NDF was pleased with the injunction, they insisted that Emefiele owed Nigerians explanations on how to carry out the policy without causing controversy.
The NDF praised the three governors, including; in a statement signed by its President, Abdulkadir Suleiman; for bringing the lawsuit, Yahaya Bello (Kogi), Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna), and Bello Matawalle (Zamfara).
According to the statement that was made available to XANDERTECH on Friday, the majority of citizens across the nation are being adversely affected by the introduction of the redesigned currency notes.
The group’s Suleiman then urged Emefiele to obey the court or risk six months in prison, claiming that the CBN boss was systematically punishing citizens.
“NDF commends the Governors of Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara States who approached the Supreme Court for its intervention, without which Nigerians would have been punished for being alive,” the group stated.
We concur with their assertion that the population is being adversely affected by the introduction of the redesigned currency notes.
“We also commend the Supreme Court for averting a catastrophe that would have devastated the nation if it had not granted this last-minute reprieve.
“The group cautions the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, and “his lackeys” in the commercial banks against considering exploiting technicalities to sidestep or disobey the Supreme Court’s order or risk being jailed for six months,”
