Pantami protests the new tax on calls and data

Isa Pantami, the minister of communications and the digital economy, has resisted further efforts by the federal government to impose a 5% excise levy on telecommunication services.

When this is put into effect, the overall tax that telecom users pay for telecom services would be 12.5%.

The Nigeria Office for Developing the Indigenous Telecom Sector, an organization housed in the Nigerian Communications Commission, is hosting an exhibition in Lagos at the time he made this announcement.

He claimed that the telecom industry already makes a significant contribution to the Nigerian economy and that raising taxes could harm its expansion.

He encouraged the administration to take into account taxing other economic sectors that aren’t helping to advance the country.
