In preparation for the elections in 2023, the Federal Government has directed the nationwide closure of universities.
In a letter to vice-chancellors and directors of inter-university centers, the National Universities Commission (NUC) announced that all universities would be closed for three weeks.
According to Chris Maiyaki, the deputy executive secretary (administration) of the NUC, Adamu Adamu, the minister of education, issued the directive.
Maiyaki stated that all of the nation’s universities would be closed from February 22 to March 14 in order to permit students to participate in the general election.
“The 2023 General Elections have been scheduled to take place on Saturday, February 25, 2023, for the Presidential and National Assembly, and on Saturday, March 11, 2023, for the Gubernatorial and State Assembly, respectively, as vice-chancellors of all universities and directors/CEO of interuniversity centers are quite aware.
The Honourable Minister of Education, Mal, acknowledges the foregoing and the concerns raised regarding the safety of our respective institutions’ staff, students, and property. Following extensive discussions with the relevant security agencies, Adamu Adamu has ordered the suspension of all academic activities and the closure of all Universities and Inter-University Centres between February 22 and March 14, 2023.
As a result, the statement reads, “Directors/Chief Executives of inter-university centers and Vice-Chancellors are hereby requested to close their respective Institutions from Wednesday, February 22, 2023, to Tuesday, March 14, 2023.”
