Posted by Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila said he was sorry he didn’t sign a warrant for the arrest of Godwin Emefiele, the head of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Gbajabiamila also said that if the CBN didn’t fix the problems Nigerians are having because of the currency swap policy, the House would have to meet again before this month’s general elections.
He said that after the Green Chamber’s meeting with Emefiele, the House would keep a close eye on how the CBN carried out the policy.
Lanre Lasisi, the Special Adviser to the Speaker on Media and Publicity, said in a statement on Sunday that Gbajabiamila said this at a town hall meeting with some ethnic groups in Surulere, Lagos. The meeting was held on Saturday.
The title of the statement was “Currency Swap: We’ll Meet Again Before Elections If… – Gbajabiamila says Tinubu Stands with Nigerians.”
“There were several times when the House of Representatives stepped in. We called the CBN governor more than once, but he wouldn’t talk to us because we had a lot of tough questions for him.
“He didn’t come until I threatened to issue an arrest warrant, which I would have done. It would have been the first time in the history of the National Assembly that a CBN governor was arrested. “Had I known, I would have done it.”
He also said, “Many people have argued about how independent and free CBN is. So, CBN is not above the law because of this.
“So, we’re watching and keeping a close eye on things. Even though we’ve all been away for our elections, we’ll get back together if we have to. If I have to, I’ll call the House back.”
