The upcoming governor’s election in Bayelsa State on November 11 has been blamed for the firefight on Saturday between police and armed youths in Nembe-Basambri.
This was revealed in a statement made on Sunday by Chief Ayibaina Duba, the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Information, Orientation, and Strategy.
According to the statement, the authorities had a “strong suspicion” that the incident had something to do with the State’s upcoming election.
According to xandertech, on Saturday, thugs in the Nembe Local Government Area of the State engaged a police squad sent to the area in a gunfight.
According to the statement, the shootings “created a serious sense of insecurity, panic, and fear among the people of the community.” The administration voiced its unhappiness over the shootings.
The government will keep collaborating with the police and its sister agencies to make sure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice.
“The Bayelsa State Government calls on the Inspector General of Police to order an immediate inquiry to determine who these criminals and their backers are who have persisted in undermining the public’s sense of security in Nembe.
The statement read, “It is time to stop treating the Nembe people’s oppressors with a kid glove.”
