We cannot extend voter registration once more, according to INEC

What will happen if the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) is extended once again has been disclosed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to XANDERTECH, there have been calls for the CVR deadline to be extended after it expired on Sunday.

Festus Okoye, the INEC National Commissioner for Information and Voters Education, commented on the event but claimed that granting the extension will thwart other planned efforts leading up to the conduct of the general elections in 2023.

On a Monday broadcast on Arise TV in Abuja, Okoye argued that it was impossible to extend CVR.

He said this:

“If every person who is eligible to register does so, as anticipated, we should allow people adequate time to do so. To allow all eligible registrants to visit our local government and state offices and register, we spaced out the voter registration procedure over a period of 13 months.

“Unfortunately, the flood, the surge, started building up just two weeks before the registration procedure was set to end. We added another month to the voter registration period in response to the surge and flood. Not only that, but we also sent more workers and INEC machines to every registration region.

“We extended the registration window from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and included Saturdays and Sundays. Unfortunately, we must put an end to this process because we cannot continue indefinitely, our electoral system is legally and constitutionally limited, and if we conduct the CVR exercise indefinitely, it would harm our deadlines and schedules of events for the general elections of 2023.
