Mahmood Yakubu, who is in charge of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), promises Nigerians that the upcoming elections will go on regardless of fuel and cash shortages.
News from Nigeria’s INEC: On Wednesday, February 8, Mahmood Yakubu gave a speech following a meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) that President Muhammadu Buhari presided over.
His admission comes in the wake of a slew of protests that have erupted across the country in response to fuel shortages and the hoarding of new Naira notes for cash.
Yakubu declared:
I can quickly describe two of these difficulties. The availability of petroleum products is the first. The National Union of Road Transport Workers brought up that as a concern during our meeting.
We communicated with the leadership of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) immediately following that meeting, and a technical community is currently working.
The plan is for them to give us access to more than 900 land- and water-based mega stations all over the country for the purpose of stocking products. This will make sure that the commission doesn’t have any problems moving people and supplies for the elections.
The issue of currency is the second. We had another meeting with the Nigerian Central Bank Governor yesterday. He also promised us that the commission would not be hindered in that regard. Fortunately for us, the apex bank handles all of our national and state accounts.
Therefore, we brought those difficulties to light and solved them. Therefore, you can rest assured that the national and state elections will take place as scheduled on February 25 and March 11.
