Ofem Obeten (DSP rtd), the national legal adviser of the Association of Police Retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme, and retired superintendent of police Iwara Ibiang Enang have urged Nigeria’s security agencies to detain and question Niger Delta militant leader Asari Dokubo over his allegedly ongoing incitement of violence.
Both attended Let’s Talk Nigeria, a popular morning discussion program on Sparkling FM Radio in Calabar, Cross River State.
The retired security personnel urged the federal government to investigate Dokubo’s allegations that senior military figures, particularly in the navy, are deeply involved in bunkering and oil thefts and that his ‘army’ is in charge of protecting some areas of the nation instead of the Nigerian Army.
They also cited the viral video on social media in which he is depicted holding weapons while insulting the Igbo as slaves and downplaying Nigeria’s security capabilities.
He has made provocative public utterances. These remarks are obscene and have the potential to arouse public ire and discontent.
Security agencies must take extremely urgent action as a result of Dokubo’s harsh words and parade of weapons, according to SP Enang, “so that it can be a deterrent to others and so that other young men do not think they can behave similarly and get away with it.”
Obeten urged that an investigation be conducted into Dokubo’s alleged slur against the Igbos in the popular social media video, in which he referred to them as slaves.
Insisting that such impunity against the state must be properly handled, he stated that the militant leader’s words and accusations should not be dismissed.
Callers on the phone-in program also denounced the militant leader’s claims about running the nation’s security networks and the impunity with which he disparaged the Igbo people.
