According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the results of the presidential and National Assembly elections held on Saturday will be announced as soon as possible.
Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja on Friday, February 24, INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu also stated that the process would not be hindered by the recent cash crunch brought on by the CBN’s naira re-design policy.
He continued, “I just want to say that we will ensure that it will be done quickly.” I have no idea how many days or hours it will take, but it will be completed quickly. We are conscious of the stress and the need to complete the procedure quickly; it will be completed quickly.
Not all of our operations are funded by cash. In point of fact, the majority of our purchases for both goods and services are made electronically; however, we require a small amount of money to compensate the unbanked individuals who provide essential services, particularly at the local level.
“We anticipated this difficulty and communicated with the Central Bank. They promised us that they would make the funds available to us for the small amount we need to pay for services in cash, and they have done so.
Additionally, our state offices for elections have already accessed these funds, allowing for unhindered personnel and material movement over the past few days. Therefore, I must commend our partnership with the Central Bank in that regard. As a result, the procedure won’t be hampered in any way.”
