The federal government issued an order on Thursday to close all land borders ahead of the February 25 elections for the national assembly and presidential offices.
Through Tony Akuneme, a spokesperson for the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the comptroller-general of the NIS, Isah Jere, stated in a statement that the election day border closure will last for 24 hours.
From 12 a.m. on Saturday to 12 a.m. on Sunday, the closure will be in effect.
He stated, “Consequently, all command comptrollers are to ensure strict enforcement of this directive,” particularly those in border states.
On election day, the inspector-general of police (IGP), Usman Baba, issued an order to restrict vehicular movement across the nation.
Persons performing essential duties will be exempt from the restriction, which takes effect from midnight on Friday until 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), electoral observers, people who respond to medical emergencies, firefighters, and others are among those on essential services.
