xandertech recalls that LP, which emerged a third force after its presidential candidate in the recent general elections, Peter Obi galvanized millions of supporters particularly the Nigerian youths, conducted its primary elections in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa states on April 16 and 17 ahead of the governorship election slated for November 11.

The primary election in Imo State was, however, marred by internal crisis which split members into different factions.

The crisis led to the split in loyalty between supporters of the embattled National Chairman, Julius Abure and the acting National Chairman, Lamido Apapa, leading to the emergence of many candidates.

xandertech reports that the Abure-led faction produced Senator Athan Achonu as winner, having polled 134 votes to defeat his closest rival, Lincoln Ugunewe who got 125 votes, while the Apapa-led faction, elected Ikechukwu Ukaegbu as the party’s flagbearer for the November 11 polls.

The Imo State Chairman of the party, Chief Onyekwere Ambrose told xandertech that the party currently has no authentic candidate to run for the governorship election.

According to him, there are about five candidates elected by different factions, stating that only the INEC and court would determine the real candidate.

He said, “We have like five people elected by different factions. It is only the court or INEC that will finally release the name of the candidate for Imo State.

“We cannot field five candidates at the same time, so as it is now, there is no sure candidate for Imo governorship election”.

The chairman, however, expressed optimism that despite the crisis, the party has a “big chance to win” the November 11 gubernatorial poll.

“Even as it is, we have a big chance because immediately this candidature issue is settled, every other person will stand behind the authentic candidate. Already, we have a good will in Imo State. We will win because it is Imo Imo, there are no two tribes here, we are one”, he added.
