Bassey Otu, the governor of Cross Rivers State, has outlawed the use of commercial motorcycles, or “okadas,” in Calabar.
Otu advised anyone who wanted to use their motorcycles for business to keep their operations in isolated regions.
The governor stated that the choice was made after consulting with the state’s security chiefs in a statement released by his chief press secretary, Emmanuel Ogbeche.
“A complete ban on all commercial motorcyclists’ activity within the Calabar metropolis.
“Remote areas outside of the city center are the only places where motorbike riders may make a respectable life.
The message says, in part, “Anyone caught violating this directive will have the motorcycle impounded and the offender prosecuted.”
