Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez has reacted to claims that Sergio Busquets’ future at Barcelona will depend on Lionel Messi’s potential return to the Blaugrana this summer.
There are reports that the Paris Saint-Germain superstar has asked the Catalan giants to ensure the 34-year-old remains at Camp Nou when he eventually rejoins them this summer.
The Spanish midfielder’s current deal expires at the end of the season, and he could leave as a free agent.
Messi’s contract also runs out at the end of the campaign, and he has reportedly rejected extension offers in favour of a move to Barcelona.
It has also been reported that the 35-year-old asked Barca to retain Jordi Alba and Busquets for next season.
But in reaction to the claims, Xavi said that Busquets’ future at Spotify Camp Nou is not tied to Lionel Messi’s potential transfer from PSG.
The former midfielder is quoted by Mundo Deportivo as saying, “The most important thing is that Busquets is calm and helps us until the end of the season.
“I don’t think his decision will depend on whether Messi comes or not. It’s difficult to choose the path, it happened to me.”
