Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has expressed his alarm about the worsening conditions of detention of Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum, his wife, and their son.
This was said by Mr. Farhan Haq, UN Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, on Friday in New York.
According to media accounts, President Bazoum and his family are reportedly without food, water, electricity, or medicine.
Since soldiers overthrew the democratically elected government on July 26, the leader has been held captive.
In addition to what the Secretary-General already indicated, he is very concerned about the way things are worsening so quickly for President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger.
According to reliable accounts, the incarceration conditions may amount to inhumane and degrading treatment, which is against international human rights legislation.
Haq continued, “And he added that those in charge of the president’s detention must ensure the complete respect and protection of his human rights and of all others being held.”
The secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, reaffirmed his concern for the president and his family’s health and safety on Thursday.
He demanded his immediate and unconditional release and reassumption of his position as state leader once more.
Continual reports of the detention of several government officials also concerned Guterres, who urgently demanded their unconditional release.
He claims that the Economic Community of West African States’ (ECOWAS) efforts to mediate a return to constitutional order in Niger are supported by the UN.
