Akinola Akinnibinu, a farmer who was 40 years old, was reportedly killed on his farm in Oko Oparun Village in the Ondo East Local Government Area of Ondo State by some alleged kidnappers.
The farmer’s wife failed to pay the ransom of N700,000 that the abductors demanded, so the suspected bandits allegedly killed the farmer.
The victim went to his cocoa farm that fateful day to harvest, according to a source who spoke with The Punch. He called his wife, Mrs. Akinnbinu, and told her to bring the N700,000 from the POS machine to the farm.
“The bandits later called the victim’s wife to send the money to the account number they sent to her,” the source stated.
“The wife invited the Amotekun Corps and other villagers to go with her as she was going there out of fear. However, when they arrived at the crime scene, they did not meet the husband or the kidnappers.
It was learned that his dead body had been sprayed with an acid-like substance on the fourth day inside the farm.
Mrs. Akinnbinu narrated the incident, claiming that her husband had been kidnapped and killed over the payment of a ransom.
“My husband left the house in the morning to his farm, and he later called me to collect money from the POS near our house,” she stated. He told me to bring the money and that he would tell me when I got to the farm about what he wanted to do with it.
Later, some men called me using my husband’s number to send money to an Opay account. They said they didn’t see the money, so I told them I sent it.
“I was scared when they asked me to come to the farm, so I told Amotekun and the other villagers. Since I had informed people, they called and said, “I will see,” as I was coming with them.
“When I got there, I didn’t see them, so we left. It wasn’t until yesterday when the villagers called that they saw a dead body covered in bamboo leaves and covered in chemicals. It was the body of my husband.”
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation had begun into the matter.
The PPRO stated, “It happened a few days ago, and we have begun an investigation.”
